Call for Sen. Murray to support legislative actions on Sound Transit
January 30, 2003
Dear Senator Murray,
I'm writing to ask for your support to stop the incredible waste of
resources known as Sound Transit. I originally voted for Sound Transit,
then watched in dismay as the board made one bad decision after another,
and at this point I would prefer to avoid light rail entirely. The current
system proposed by the ST board will not be even remotely cost-effective
(as compared with other transit projects in the US), nor will it
significantly impact the traffic issues in their taxing districts. I feel
that the Sound Transit board has become completely unresponsive to the
public good. There are two bills currently in the WA State Legislature,
SB5537 and SB5538, that would help make ST either responsible again, or
give us the opportunity to use the money for more effective transportation
options. Either of these bills will help; both would be great. Having
elected representation would go a long way to creating effective leadership
on the ST board, and an opportunity to vote on the current situation is
more than reasonable.
Senator Murray, I don't know if you have influence with the WA State
Legislature or not, but if you do, I'd like to ask for your help and
support for these two bills. In addition, anything you can do to increase
the accountability of the Sound Transit board would be deeply appreciated.
There are _far_ more effective ways to spend the vast sums of money
collected by Sound Transit! Allowing them to chew up the Downtown Seattle
Bus Tunnel for such a microscopic return would be a disaster.
Sincerely,
Chuck Pliske, President
