Legislature needs to hear from you in support of two bills on Sound Transit accountability

THE LEGISLATURE IS STEPPING UP TO THE RESPONSIBILITY OF HOLDING SOUND TRANSIT ACCOUNTABLE! THEY NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU, THE PERSON PAYING THE BILLS AND NOT GETTING THE SERVICE, THAT THEY ARE DOING THE RIGHT THING.

YOUR CALLS/E-MAILS/TESTIMONY NEEDED THIS WEEK AND NEXT, especially to Committee members of House and Senate. (E-mail addresses of committee members below.)

Brief message of support for SB 5537 and 5538 and hope that they will support is all you need to say. A thank you to the sponsors is also appropriate.

There is strong opposition to these Bills from several groups. It is critical that you call or testify on behalf of taxpayers and users of transit. If you belong to a labor union, Assoc. of General Contractors, Sierra Club, Transportation Choices Coalition or 1000 Friends, make your wishes known- we expect that their leadership will be testifying against these measures on behalf of Sound Transit.

THE LEGISLATION

Senators Senators Benton, Prentice, Esser, Rossi, Finkbeiner, Johnson and T. Sheldon have introduced two pieces of legislation aimed at Sound Transit reform and accountability.

SB5538

AN ACT Relating to election and authority of Sound Transit board members; and amending RCW 81.112.040, 81.112.010, and 81.112.030.

"In the case of the Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority, the board will consist of nine members chosen through district-based elections, as provided in (c) of this subsection."

SB5537

AN ACT Relating to transportation alternatives in central Puget Sound; and adding a new section to chapter 81.112 RCW.

It calls for a vote on the Link Light Rail proposal at the next general election in the relevant service area, and if it does not pass, a reprogramming of the money to BRT/Monorai/Vanpool/Commuter rail after a process to determine best ratio of investments. It also calls for this reprogramming if ST does not put the LR on the next general election ballot (The last sentence about only reprogramming to monorail will be amended out since it is inconsistent with the rest of the language. The legislation will also have some language changes, but substance will stay the same.)
